Forest ReLeaf Nursery in Creve Coeur Park offers several programs, but Val is mostly involved with Project Communitree, where 3-gallon native MO trees and shrubs are provided for planting on public and not-for-profit land. Volunteers plant bare-root seedlings, tend to them and then later distribute them free to the community on a first-come, first-served basis. So far this year Forest ReLeaf has given away over 14,000 trees! In addition, victims of natural disasters like in Maryland Heights and Joplin have been given over 5,000 trees to help in their rebuilding. The World Bird Sanctuary is an excellent place to visit, completely free and open every day from 8-5 except for Thanksgiving and Christmas. WBS has wonderful Visitor & Nature Centers, along with numerous bird exhibits, educational programs, and special events such as World Eagle Day. Their propagation department and state-of-the-art wildlife hospital are amazing, and their mission includes helping to restore endangered species as well as treating and rehabilitating injured birds. Val volunteers with the Field Studies Team, banding birds (like the Northern Saw Whet Owl pictured above) to learn about migration, breeding, and population trends.
